Reviews
Camp Chef Stainless Steel Coffee Pot 28 Cup is rated 3.0 out of 5 by 2.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Capacious and Sturdy Nicely made and polished to a sparkling shine. Sturdy without being overly heavy. The basket fits snuggly and the holes are small enough to work with a medium grind without getting too much sediment. On a Camp Chef 30k BTU burner on a warm, still day at 500 feet altitude, it took 13 minutes to produce the first bubbles in the dome, and after a further 7 minutes of perc'ing it produced the expected pot of fairly strong, acidic coffee percolators are known for. The bail handle stayed completely cool, but do heed the “HOT" warning etched into the side handle, especially if over a campfire. Be aware that the name of the product and the measurements on the box refer only to the full capacity of the pot as an empty water boiler. Using the coffee insert changes the numbers dramatically. The pot came with NO instructions, so let me spell out the usage here : When making coffee, the water should come not quite to the bottom of the basket. Using measurements and trial and error, I found that this means adding water to cover the bottom two rows of holes at the base of the spout. This is 14 regulation cups of water or 192 ounces. A finished 5-ounce cup of coffee is made with 6 ounces of water, meaning the pot brews 32 standard servings of coffee. That’s not the full story, as a 5-ounce serving is one of those tiny, 3-inch tall doll toys you get served at fancy buffets. Even Starbuck's smallest "short" size is 8 ounces. What any burly camper considers a wake-up worthy mug of coffee is at least a hand-filling 12-ounce serving. So by THAT metric, this pot will get 16 campers ready to head out for adventure in about 20 minutes. Using the standard ratio of 16:1 for water to coffee grounds, you want to start off with 12 ounces of coarse ground coffee. Now, I used to get super angry about package shrinkage (not the George Costanza type). Remember that coffee was ALWAYS sold in one pound cans? Well now lots of supermarket ground coffee comes in 12-ounce bags (Dunkin Donuts, for example) so this works out perfectly for a full batch in this pot! Instructions wise: 14 cups of water, a 12 oz bag of coarse coffee. Bring the water to a light boil. When bubbles start popping in the dome, manage heat to produce 1 bubble every 2-3 seconds. Perc for 7-10 minutes depending on your taste. Importantly, REMOVE the brew basket and tower before pouring, or you’ll get a gritty, sludgy cupful. DON’T return the pot to the burner because boiled and burnt coffee is horrible. Transfer immediately to warm bellies, an insulated thermos bottle, or at least cover with a towel. I’m holding back one star because my perfect 5-star pot would have a real stay-cool handle, insulated double-wall construction, and include instructions and real-world measurements.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from It leaks around the bottom what can I say? Recently bought this for a big family camping excursion, unpacked it, threw away the box, fired up the stove, brewed a pot of coffee, it leaks around the base. Not badly, but a leak is a leak...
